Iberdrola, the Spanish energy company, could be weighing up a bid for British Energy, according to reports.
Chairman of the firm Ignacio Galan noted that the UK is an "important market" and that profits would be a key driver of any deal, said the Guardian.
But Mr Galan did not stipulate if his organisation has managed to look at the books of the energy firm, which is partially owned by the government.
And the official stated that investment opportunties are highly important even if nothing is finalised at this stage.
"I think the basic framework is in place. We need to work on the details but the government is sending the right signals for further investment in the UK," he commented.
Strategy Director at Iberdrola Jose Luis del Valle added that the organisation must look to "do the right thing".
This week it was reported that Vattenfall was to link up with RWE in an attempt to purchase British Energy, something that may impact on electricity prices.
