Meeting looks to help fuel poor

23 April 2008

A meeting is set to take place today looking at how older and poorer people can lose their fuel poverty tag.

Various parties are set to attend the summit, such as regulator and organiser Ofgem and Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary.

One of the themes to be considered is the way in which additional help can be given to consumers with pre-payment meters.

A coalition of groups before the meeting said that the government has so far failed to eradicate poverty and this should be the overall goal.

"The action taken so far is nowhere near enough to help those pushed into fuel poverty this year, let alone in the future," Director General of Age Concern Gordon Lishman told the BBC.

He added that the methods the government uses are in "disarray".

In related news, this week uSwitch.com stated that consumers may become more indebted to their energy providers in the future after price hikes.
