Fuel help announced by Ofgem

24 April 2008

A number of help channels have been offered to those who may need assistance in paying their energy bills.

Various bodies met in London yesterday, including Ofgem, ministers and energy companies, to talk about measures that could be taken, reports the BBC.

While no additional funding was offered for those in fuel poverty - the term used if 10% of income is spent on bills - they will get support in the form of switching internet sites.

Chairman at Ofgem Sir John Mogg claimed that the developments should be encouraging for the poorest consumers.

He commented: "The actions from this Ofgem summit will help ensure that resources to fight fuel poverty have the highest impact by targeting them precisely on those who need them."

But the plans came in for criticism from a number of organisations such as Energywatch.
Chief Executive Alan Asher noted that some may have to choose between "heating and eating".

National Energy Action has suggested that another million people could be dropped into fuel poverty in 2008, reports the Times.
