'Further energy woes' for NI consumers

25 April 2008

Electricity prices may be set to rise in Northern Ireland this year, following increases in gas charges.

Iain Osbourne, Energy Regulator, was informed of the possible developments by NIE, something that has led to meeting between him and the Northern Ireland assembly's Enterprise and Trade Committee.

The regulator said that it is imperative the body acts so that consumers are not hit by rising prices that have been paramount across the globe.

"Now is the time to have a serious discussion about the next step to meaningfully tackle fuel poverty and this needs political leadership," he commented.

He added that efforts will be made to keep down costs that can be determined on a local basis.

And "underlying" fuel costs are undoubtedly impacting on the industry in a negative fashion of late, Mr Osbourne remarked.

It was recently reported that gas charges in the area could increase by 28%, after Phoenix Gas announced changes in costs.
