Centrica 'may fight British Energy bids'

29 April 2008

A possible bid by RWE or EDF Energy for British Energy could be opposed by Centrica, according to reports

The firm is unhappy that the two European outfits may bid alone for the partially-owned government operator and will seek guidance from the Office of Fair Trading should an offer be made, reports the Observer.

Centrica is set to argue that if British Energy was sold to RWE then the latter company would have the remit to stockpile energy for its own consumers.

It argued that utility charges could be raised even further via this avenue, should these developments occur.

Any referral of a move for British Energy may put the brakes on the completion of the acquisition deal for the firm, while the authorities analyse the situation.

The deadline for bidding has been altered and organisations wanting to get in on the act have been told to submit entries by May 9th.
