The fuel provider Shell has said that it no longer wishes to be a part of a wind farm that could be constructed on the Thames Estuary.
Shell admitted that it wants to pull out of the London Array project and instead focus on opportunities in the US, reports the BBC.
Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary, said that he is disappointed with the move by Shell to backtrack on its original level of commitment.
"I think a lot of people would want to understand why, especially in a week in which the company has announced record profits," he commented.
Moreover, Chief Executive at Eon Paul Golby noted that a new level of "risk" has now been attached to the project as a result of the development. He added that his firm is still committed to the scheme.
The project argues that it can make a significant "contribution" towards renewable energy targets laid out by the government.
