Board members at British Energy are set to meet today to talk about the possible takeover move for the firm by EDF Energy.
EDF was the only outfit to submit an offer to British Energy at the end of last Friday's deadline and has prompted such a meeting, reports the Times.
According to sources, the government wants to ensure that competition is seen during the bidding process, despite the fact that the deadline was not met by a number of others.
It is also thought that Centrica wishes to maintain an interest in the part government-owned body, which has eight power stations under its control.
Chief Executive at British Energy Bill Coley and Chairman Sir Adrian Montague will both be involved in the discussions, which are expected to last for two days.
Last week it was reported that Spanish firm Iberdrola was believed to have been finalising its own bid for the British firm.
