Security ramped up at power firms

19 May 2008

Plans have been put in place by the biggest power firms in the UK ahead of possible protests against coal-fired stations.

Over 40 security staff met up in a bid to see how the big six firms can fight off any demonstrations, reports the Independent.

These organisations have predicted that large-scale demonstrations against coal power may be seen this summer.

David Porter, Chief Executive of organiser the Association of Electricity Producers, said that it is important customer services are not disrupted and this is why the planning has been instigated.

"It was to help companies learn from experience and to make sure they are able to deal with protests effectively and safely so they can also maintain their responsibilities toward customers," he commented.

Protests have been planned by Camp for Climate Action later in the summer, with a week-long rally proposed to start August 4th.

In January, councillors in Medway approved plans by E.ON to build a coal-fired plant in Kent.
