Energy consumers 'paying too much'

20 May 2008

UK consumers are being forced to pay over the odds for their gas and electricity, it has been claimed this week.

Energywatch suggested that families are having to pay more than £400 than they should because of fixed prices by providers, reports Scotland and Sunday.

The watchdog asserted that a link between the price of gas and the price of oil does not justify the charges being incurred by consumers.

Chief Executive at the outfit Alan Asher claimed that there is no clear reason why consumers are being forced to pay more than is necessary.

"The prices being charged for gas and electricity bear no proper market relation to the cost of production or the availability of supplies," he will tell a committee of the House of the Commons.

He said that there is no shortage of gas but customers are still being warned about large price rises.

Power companies this week revealed that they are going to improve security in the build up to planned protests against coal power.
