Suez ends BE interest

23 May 2008

Discussions between the French outfit Suez and British Energy over a possible purchase have finished, it has been revealed.

The overseas company has said that it wishes to instead strike a deal with Gaz de France and that this remains on top of its agenda, Reuters noted.

And Suez unequivocally outlined that it has stepped back from the British Energy bidding table and will focus on the other matter.

It commented: "Accordingly, Suez confirms that, in its discussions regarding the future development of the nuclear energy sector in the UK, those relating to a potential offer for British Energy have now ceased."

Now further discussions cannot take place until the organisation has ended similar talks with Gaz de France, because of UK regulations.

This development is a "priority" at Suez, it added.

Board members at British Energy were due to meet last week to analyse a bid for the firm by EDF Energy.
