Reactors at British Energy shut down

9 June 2008

British Energy has revealed that it has shut down a nuclear reactor, the second such incident in recent times.

Over the course of the past week, a reactor in Scotland's Hunterston, along with another in Sizewell B, has had to be closed down, the part-owned government outfit said.

Insiders stated that the developments are not great news for the company, which is currently subject to takeover bids.

A source told the Times: "It will be hard to get any bidder to pay a full price, taking all this into account."

But the Chief Executive at British Energy Bill Coley attempted to downplay the problems, while refusing to offer up any thoughts about the acquisition procedure.

Recently it was revealed that French firm Suez had ended its interest in buying British Energy, because other deals were further up its list of priorities.

Another pact with Gaz de France was more important, it highlighted.
