Ofgem is to consider whether or not customers were charged too much by energy provider npower, after the firm allegedly altered billing.
An investigation has started after some bill payers spotted alterations in their accounts and thought they had been overcharged, reports the Guardian.
While the energy regulator refused to comment officially on the event, a spokesman at npower stated that it fully believes in transparency.
He commented: "We have always said that we have nothing to hide. We are sure we will be vindicated by this investigation."
Retired art teacher Robert Bramwell told the paper that he became dubious after certain sections of his bills were changed in 2007.
Direct debit calculations were amended, he suggested, so that a different "sculptured profile" resulted.
This week, Tory leader David Cameron said that consumers ought to be able to compare bills in an effort to save money.
