Households will be 'crippled' by fuel poverty

19 June 2008

Consumers will struggle to pay their fuel bills in the future following news that there could be price hikes of up to 40% during the rest of this year, uSwitch.com has said.

According to uSwitch.com, consumers will be forking out an extra £555 in energy payments as the average bill will increase to a predicted £1,467 in the coming winter, up 61% from £912 in January this year.

Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson has called on consumers to take action now to "limit" any further possible price hikes.

"Online energy plans remain a good option for those who want to pay a lower price now and are happy to take their chances on the market in the future," she advised.

"However, fixed or capped price plans could be a lifeline for those who are more vulnerable to price rises." Already this week, leader of the Conservative party David Cameron called on consumers to compare their energy bills their neighbour's.
