Fresh 'green plans' to be outlined

26 June 2008

New sustainable energy plans are set to be released by the government today, as officials look to outline alternative forms of power. Fresh avenues of power could be wind turbines, because the UK has targets to meet by 2020, reports the BBC. At present, just 5% of renewable energy is generated in Britain, but the European Union goal is 15% by the stated date. Director of the Renewable Energy Association Philip Wolfe noted that those in power need to show that they are performing well in this area. "We have only 12 years left and government still wants to use two of those talking about it. The industry has a very short space of time in which to meet challenging targets," he commented. He added that there are "gaps" and "anomalies" that should be looked at quickly so that some difficulties are ironed out. Bosses at some of Europe's biggest energy firms this week warned that consumers may be in for large bill rises thanks to the growing price of wholesale energy.
