Consumers are set to see energy bills rise in the UK in a bid to meet European Union (EU) targets, it has been claimed. Ernst & Young stated that due to greenhouse gas emission cutting goals, charges in the UK may leap above £200 a year. Such fees are set to be witnessed in the form of emissions permits, improved energy meters and increased charges for energy itself, the organisation claimed. Director at Ernst & Young Simon Harvey urged people to take note of the changes because they will be hit in the pocket eventually. "There seems to be a worrying degree of apathy among consumers to reduce energy consumption, despite daily headlines about rising fuel bills," he commented. And analyst with the firm Duncan Coneybeare added that it is difficult to see if consumers believe the extra charges are necessary. Last week, Gordon Brown promised a new revolution in green energy as he looks to meet EU targets by 2020.
