Fuel 'impacts on council services'

8 July 2008

Council services could be about to rise in cost in the UK because of the growing price of fuel, it has been claimed. According to the Local Government Association (LGA), the price of maintaining and operating council amenities such as bin lorries and gritters has risen in recent times and this is a trend that could continue. Various councils are implementing solutions in an effort to drive down fuel costs, the study noted, such as green forms of energy. Chairman of the LGA Sir Simon Milton said that local bodies will innovate in an effort to ensure that services are still carried out at the lowest possible cost. He commented: "Councils have been leading the way in adopting new environmentally friendly ways of saving energy but we need to continue to do more." Smaller businesses will also benefit from the move, he added, because they will be encouraged to help out the environment. This week, a source in the energy industry said that prices at British Gas could be about to rise by 15% this year.
