A high number of households are choosing to take out capped energy packages over fears that bills will rise again this year, it has been claimed. Because of predictions that gas and electricity charges will increase in the near future, almost 200,000 homes a month are opting to sign up for these services, uSwitch.com noted. The organisation said that consumers may be in line to save £422 if the possible 40% hike occurs at some stage this year. Head of Home Services at uSwitch.com Tim Wolfenden remarked that it is now likely charges will be raised but that people can act to ensure they are not hit too hard in the pocket. "Opting for a fixed or capped deal is a sure-fire way of safeguarding against energy price increases. However, like fixed-rate mortgages, these energy deals could swiftly disappear from the market," he commented. Mr Wolfenden added that because these deals may be removed quickly consumers ought to act swiftly. Citizens Advice recently warned families that direct debit payments only cover an estimated charge and if they use this method they may be in arrears to energy firms.
