Britain's energy customers could cut £4.6 billion a year from their gas and electricity bills if they take steps to improve their energy efficiency, a new report suggests. According to British Gas, by installing energy efficient appliances, fitting insulation and making simple behavioural changes, households could cut their energy usage significantly. Interim results from an energy reduction trial organised by the energy supplier and monitored by the Institute for Public Policy Research have been positive. The Green Streets trial has seen 64 households across eight cities battle it out to see who can make the biggest cuts in their carbon emissions with a £30,000 budget to spend. Five months into the programme, those involved have slashed the amount of energy they consume by up to 30%, with some managing a reduction of 50%. If all UK households followed in their footsteps they could save a collective £4.6 billion in gas and electricity costs, British Gas claimed. British Gas Managing Director Phil Bentley said: "Reducing energy consumption is the single most important thing households can do to reduce bills and cut emissions." Last week, a report by British Gas owner Centrica warned that domestic gas bills could rise as high as £1000 over the next few years.
