Consumers can slash their gas and electricity bills by switching to more efficient household appliances, according to the Energy Saving Trust. A spokesperson for the organisation said energy efficient fridges and freezers in particular could help families cut costs. Caroline Rams said households could save around £35 a year by replacing an old fridge-freezer with a newer, more efficient model. "If we all made the change to more efficient cold appliances this week, together we'd save around £700 million every year," she stressed. Ms Rams urged consumers buying new appliances to look out for the Energy Saving Recommended logo, which appears on the most energy efficient electric items. According to the Energy Saving Trust, £1.5 billion is spent powering fridges and freezers every year in the UK, while a further £1.3 billion is spent powering washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers. Failing to switch off appliances at the wall also costs consumers, with the UK's total annual bill for leaving electrical items on standby amounting to over £1 billion, the organisation claims.
