British Gas announces price rise

31 July 2008

British Gas has become the latest gas and electricity supplier to announce its second increase in energy prices this year. From today, British Gas customers will see their electricity bills rise by 9% and their gas bills jump by 35%, or an average of £37 a year and £230 a year respectively. A dual fuel tariff with British Gas will now cost £1,322, compared to £1,055 before the increase and £912 on January 1st this year, uSwitch.com calculates. Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at the independent price comparison site, said the announcement acts as "the second nail in the coffin for affordable energy". "With every price increase we are edging closer to household energy bills hitting a record high," she remarked. She advised consumers to cut back on their energy usage as much as possible and to make sure they are paying the lowest price possible for their gas and electricity. Following this latest energy price rise, some MPs are calling for a windfall tax on gas and electricity suppliers.
