Consumers struggling with rising gas and electricity bills can reduce their outgoings by going green, Friends of the Earth has claimed. A spokesperson for the environmental campaign group said people should not feel "helpless" as energy costs increase and should take action to cut their usage. "Things like updating the home boiler, installing better insulation and using public transport instead of the car could save households hundreds of pounds every year," she stated. Her comments come after two of the UK's major energy suppliers - EDF Energy and British Gas - put up the cost of their gas and electricity for the second time this year. According to the National Insulation Association, over half of all UK homes have insufficient levels of insulation, which is likely to be adding to their gas and electricity bills unnecessarily. Indeed, the organisation claims that over 40 per cent of the heat lost in an average home is through walls and loft spaces.
