Gas and electricity price rise for Scottish and Southern customers

22 August 2008

Scottish and Southern Energy has announced increases in the price of its gas and electricity, just hours after E.ON's pricing declaration. The energy provider said that from August 25th it will put up prices by 19% for electricity and 29% for gas. It follows on from January's increases and brings the average household bill for a dual fuel Scottish and Southern Energy customer to £1,259, up from £1,006, uSwitch.com claims. Tim Wolfenden, Head of Home Services at the independent price comparison site, said the latest price increase, coupled with E.ON's announcement, will leave households "reeling". "Consumers should look to pay by direct debit and move to an online plan where possible to get the best available prices and limit the impact of spiralling energy bills," he advised. Scottish and Southern is the fourth major energy provider to announce price increases ahead of the winter. E.ON, British Gas and EDF Energy have all said their prices must rise as a result of soaring wholesale costs.
