Almost half of British consumers blame successive governments for rising gas and electricity costs, according to a new survey by Saga Home Insurance. It found that 46% of the population believe government is responsible for increases in energy bills thanks to rises in fuel duty and VAT. However, the energy suppliers themselves are not let off the hook, as 44% of Brits point the finger of blame at the companies making the pricing announcements. Also coming under the spotlight was excessive global consumption, declining supplies, demand from emerging markets and conflict in the Middle East. The publication of the survey comes after E.ON and Scottish and Southern Energy put up their gas and electricity prices for the second time this year. EDF Energy and British Gas made similar moves earlier this month. Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of Saga, said: "Whatever the reason for rising energy prices, consumers face an expensive winter."
