Older people are being urged to claim their increased winter fuel payments as quickly as possible ahead of the colder months. This year, households with someone aged 60-79 will receive a payment of £250, up from £200, and those with someone over 80 will receive £400, up from £300. Households already in receipt of the benefit will not have to take any further action unless their circumstances have changed, Pensions Minister Mike O'Brien confirmed. But he said those who have not received a winter fuel payment before should apply by September 19th to ensure they receive their entitlement before Christmas. He also urged older consumers to shop around and consider switching their gas and electricity suppliers or changing to a cheaper tariff to save money. Last week, E.ON and Scottish and Southern Energy increased their gas and electricity prices for the second time this year following similar moves from EDF Energy and British Gas.
