'Era of cheap gas and electricity is over' warns government

29 August 2008

The government has issued a stark warning to gas and electricity customers about the likely direction of their energy bills. Business Secretary John Hutton insisted "the era of cheap energy is over" and indicated that high gas and electricity prices could be here to stay. He said that in such a climate it is important to consider how the government and energy providers can help those who are struggling to pay their bills. "There is genuine concern about the difficulties that people will face paying their heating bills over the coming winter and we are looking at extra support," he remarked. However, he ruled out a windfall tax on energy companies, insisting the government would not take any action that could restrict investment in the energy sector. His comments come after several major energy suppliers put up their gas and electricity prices for the second time this year, blaming rising wholesale costs.
