Gas and electricity price rises hit npower customers

1 September 2008

Customers of npower will become the next group to see their gas and electricity bills increase after the energy provider announced rises in its domestic prices. Electricity prices will rise by 14%, while gas prices will rise by 26%, bringing the average annual bill for a household on a dual fuel npower tariff to £1,278, up from £1,056. The announcement makes npower the fifth major energy supplier to increase its prices for the second time this year. EDF Energy, British Gas, Scottish and Southern Energy and E.ON have all put up their gas and electricity costs over the last month. Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, said there is just one more of the big six energy providers left to make a move before the "industry-wide" wave of increases is complete. "Those who have never shopped around before are already paying way above the odds for their energy - they should switch today so that they can start to make immediate savings," she remarked. Last week, Business Secretary John Hutton warned consumers that the era of cheap energy is over and that higher gas and electricity prices are likely to stay.
