ScottishPower deals final blow to gas and electricity customers

1 September 2008

ScottishPower has become the last of the major energy suppliers to announce increases in the cost of its gas and electricity, dealing a final blow to consumers. The company said its electricity prices will increase by 9.4%, while its gas prices will rise by 34.4%. The new costs came into effect today. ScottishPower's announcement comes hot on the heels of a similar statement by npower, which increased its gas and electricity prices by 14% and 26% respectively. The average annual bill for a household on a dual fuel tariff from ScottishPower will now stand at £1,375, up from £1,100, uSwitch.com calculates. Tim Wolfenden, Head of Home Services at the independent price comparison service, said few households will come out of this year's second wave of energy price hikes unscathed. "Now that the final increases are known, consumers should switch today so that they can start to make immediate savings," he stated. Last week, the Local Government Association called for an annual levy on gas and electricity suppliers to fund a home insulation programmes that would help hard-pressed households meet soaring bills.
