The government's £1 billion energy deal to help consumers improve the energy efficiency of their properties and cut their gas and electricity bills has been welcomed by uSwitch.com. However, the independent price comparison and switching services has insisted ministers must now prove that their sums add up and convince families that it is serious about offering support. It is calling on the government to provide full details of where the money will be used and how it will help to cut energy costs for hard-pressed families. And it adds that consumers need to know exactly how many households will be lifted out of fuel poverty as a result of the deal and how the government plans to tackle future increases in the cost of gas and electricity. Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, said: "Consumers will want to see these sums add up if the government's solution is to have any credibility." Earlier this week, unions called on the government to impose a windfall tax on the profits of the major energy suppliers.
