Gas and electricity provider E.ON has apologised for comments made by one of its executives about the impact of rising energy bills. Speaking at an Ofgem seminar last week, Mark Owen-Lloyd joked that higher gas and electricity prices will mean "more money for us". Consumer groups reacted with fury at the comments, while Prime Minister Gordon Brown branded them "inappropriate". E.ON apologised "unreservedly" for any offence Mr Owen-Lloyd may have caused, insisting his remarks "in no way" represent the views of the company. Commenting, an energywatch spokesman said it was in "poor taste" for the executive to make such a joke the day before the government announces a £1 billion package to help tackle fuel poverty. Ministers last week unveiled a programme to fund free cavity wall and loft insulation for pensioners and low income families and provide discounts for all other households. The move comes after all six of the major gas and electricity providers put up their prices for the second time this year.
