Government launches energy efficiency ad campaign

18 September 2008

The government has launched a new television advertising campaign to encourage households to improve the energy efficiency of their homes in an effort to save money on their gas and electricity bills. British film director Shane Meadows was commissioned to work on the ads, which will show a father's attempts to get his family to cut down on the amount of energy they use. Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said that as well as encouraging reductions in gas and electricity usage, the campaign also aims to boost take-up of the government's recently announced package, which offers financial assistance to households fitting insulation. According to the Energy Savings Trust, phone calls to its ACT ON CO2 advice line have almost quadrupled since the announcement was made last week. Mr Benn commented: "I am encouraged that following last week's announcement, people are looking to take action to cut their fuel bills and save energy at the same time. We now need to build on that enthusiasm." All six of the UK's major energy providers have put up their gas and electricity prices ahead of the winter months following increase at the beginning of the year.
