Simple energy efficiency measures 'can cut bills significantly'

19 September 2008

Households could reduce their gas and electricity bills significantly by taking simple energy efficiency measures, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Paula Owen, an energy doctor at the organisation, said draught proofing a property could save a family around £25 a year in heating costs. Installing cavity wall insulation could provide savings of around £120 a year, while turning down thermostats by just one degree Celsius could reduce bills by 10%. "If you already have a well insulated house or are looking for some cheap and simple ways to reduce your bills, there are behavioural changes," Ms Owen added. "Start drawing the curtains at night and sew thermal linings into them to stop heat escaping." Figures from the Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes show that UK households waste around £6.8 billion on energy every year. It claims that the amount of warmth lost through poorly-insulated roofs and walls is enough to heat 2.2 million homes for a whole year.
