Tesco offers insulation service

23 September 2008

Supermarket chain Tesco is offering to insulate the homes of its customers in a bid to help them cut their gas and electricity costs. Loft and cavity wall insulation will be provided for £199, while people over the age of 70 and those on benefits will be offered the service for free. According to figures seen by Tesco, over nine million domestic residences in the UK are inadequately insulated. Over the next three years the supermarket aims to provide insulation for half a million of them. "Ensuring that your home is properly insulated is the single biggest thing you can do to save energy and help fight climate change," said David North, Tesco's Community and Government Director. He said that according to the Energy Saving Trust, £275 could be saved by the average household every year by insulating lofts and cavity walls. Tesco's announcement comes after Gordon Brown unveiled government plans to provide free insulation for pensions and families on low incomes, as well as discounts for many other households.
