'Don't be complacent' about energy prices

13 November 2008

Consumers are being urged not to become complacent about energy prices after Scottish & Southern Energy revealed it hopes to cut gas and electricity costs next year.

uSwitch.com points out that energy bills have increased by 42% over the last 12 months and consumers will be paying these higher prices throughout the winter.

The independent price comparison and switching service said households should still be on the lookout for cheaper energy tariffs and should ensure they are using their gas and electricity efficiently.

"Consumers need to be aware that the promise of a future price cut will not limit the impact of energy prices this winter so they still need to take action now to protect themselves," said Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy.

Scottish & Southern Energy said that if wholesale gas and electricity prices continue to fall, then it is "optimistic" that it can deliver a price reduction for domestic customers in the early part of 2009.
