NEA calls for pre-Christmas energy price cuts

24 November 2008

National Energy Action has called on gas and electricity providers to give consumers an early Christmas present and cut prices before the festive season.

Maria Wardrobe, the organisation's warm homes campaigner, said energy companies should not wait until the spring to lower bills, as has been suggested.

Her comments come after Scottish & Southern Energy signalled its intention to reduce prices early next year, provided wholesale energy costs continue to decline.

"Our plea to the energy supply industry is to look at reducing the cost of fuel as soon as possible," said Ms Wardrobe.

She also called on the government to allocate extra funding towards tackling the problem of fuel poverty in the UK.

According to National Energy Action, over five million UK households are currently living in fuel poverty.

The government has pledged to end fuel poverty among vulnerable groups in England by 2010 and among all households by 2016.
