Another energy supplier has said it hopes to bring down bills in the new year, provided that the cost of wholesale gas and electricity continues its downward trend.
E.ON UK confirmed that it is monitoring wholesale prices closely in the hope of introducing reductions for its customers in 2009.
Chief Executive Paul Golby said: "We're obviously very aware of the difficulties our customers are experiencing, especially considering the current economic problems."
Scottish and Southern Energy, Scottish Power and British Gas have already signalled their intention to cut gas and electricity prices next year.
This followed calls from consumer groups for energy providers to lower bills in line with reductions in the price of oil.
According to Consumer Focus, gas prices have risen by 51% since the beginning of the year, while electricity prices have increased by 28%.
Households eager to see an earlier reduction in their bills could save money by switching their gas and electricity supplier before Christmas.
