SMEs must 'get to grips with energy switching'

3 December 2008

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must "get to grips" with energy switching in order to save money on their gas and electricity, it has been claimed.

According to uSwitch.com, many SMEs are missing out on competitive deals because they do not bother to shop around or change suppliers.

The independent price comparison and switching service is therefore urging them to seek out more favourable tariffs once their existing contracts expire.

Tim Wolfenden, Head of Business Services at uSwitch.com, said: "SME owners must quickly get to grips with the fact that switching to the right energy contract will save them money throughout the next few years - a vital help in light of a looming recession."

His comments were made in response to Ofgem's report on the small business energy supply market, which highlights several areas of concern.

Among them is the belief held by many SMEs that switching energy suppliers will not result in significant savings, as well as a lack of transparency over the terms and conditions of gas and electricity contracts.

Meanwhile, a number of the UK's major energy suppliers have signalled their intention to cut prices in the spring.

Business energy customers who choose to heed uSwitch.com's advice can compare deals online now.
