npower scraps pre-payment meter surcharges

4 December 2008

Gas and electricity supplier npower has announced that it will be cutting its gas pre-payment meter prices by £30 following a similar move with electricity in August.

The company said its gas pre-payment customers will now pay the same as those who pay for their energy quarterly by cash or by cheque.

Kevin Miles Chief Executive of npower retail, said: "These changes are as a result of reducing our costs for servicing pre-payment meters."

He said they also demonstrate npower's desire to work with regulators in order to bring about improvements in the energy retail market.

And he added that if wholesale energy prices continue to fall through the winter months, npower hopes to be able to reduce its prices for customers.

Meanwhile, uSwitch.com has launched a new pre-payment meter switching service that aims to help those who are forced to use pre-payment meters get a better deal.
