Firms 'to make energy efficiency a priority'

26 February 2009

Support for greener business models has become a staple part of many companies' policies, according to new research.

The Economist Intelligence Unit, whose work covers more than 200 countries and six industries, has found that energy efficiency will be a high or moderate priority for 73% of firms over the next two years, as they aim to reduce costs.

Even though the study revealed some businesses will move environmentally-friendliness down their agendas in the coming years, there are apparently enough organisations concentrating on being green to be positive about the subject.

Robin Bew, Editorial Director of the Economist Intelligence Unit, said: "This report shows that, although businesses will necessarily switch focus to survival mode, many firms are starting to embrace some of the short-term cost benefits of energy efficiency."

All research findings were based on the Economist Intelligence Unit's Country Analysis division, a survey of 538 senior business executives across the world and 18 in-depth interviews with relevant executives and experts.
