Millions of households throughout the UK are in debt to energy suppliers, new statistics reveal.
Findings compiled by uSwitch.com show a total of £820 million is owed to energy suppliers throughout the country, a figure which it believes is likely to increase.
"Consumers have to start taking a more active role in managing their energy bills. If you are going into the red and can afford to increase your payments, contact your supplier," says Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com.
She adds that despite falling energy costs, those who pay by direct debit are still feeling the pinch, especially as 74% of households now pay via this method.
The website claims the average energy direct debit now stands at £85 per month, with suppliers increasing direct debits by £22 per month to offset last year's price increases.
According to the National Audit Office, UK households spend £20 billion on energy each year, mainly on electricity and gas. Looking for the lowest price on your energy bill? Search online now.
