Offshore wind energy 'one step closer'

25 March 2009

The national grid could soon provide wind energy to the UK's homes, regulatory body Ofgem has revealed.

It could help connect ten million homes to the renewable energy source by 2020, Ofgem suggests, which will help the country move towards a low-carbon energy supply.

Energy and Climate Change Minister Mike O'Brien comments: "It is vital we maximise the UK's natural resources to help in the fight against climate change and reduce our reliance on volatile foreign oil and gas markets."

He believes it could be the "single biggest contribution" to the renewable energy target the UK has seen so far and will provide a cost-effective way of providing energy to the country's homes.

Ofgem announced in recent days that it was to clamp down on unjustified price differences from energy suppliers, giving consumers greater protection against excessive bill increases.
