Energy-efficient measures 'cut cost of family home'

22 April 2009

Making a home energy-efficient by installing features such as cavity wall insulation can make all the difference, one homeowner has revealed.

Andy Phipps told the Guardian how he planned to extend his home, although a 50% increase in his gas bills was somewhat offputting.

He revealed to the paper: "After contacting insulation manufacturers and discussing our thoughts with the architect we were amazed to realise that the house insulation could be improved for very little extra money."

Energy losses through the walls were reduced by half, he continued, with water underfloor heating and reduced floor insulation also adding to the energy-efficiency of the home.

Homeowners can cut the costs of their energy bills by comparing providers online with uSwitch.com.

Earlier this month, the price comparison site revealed that over a third of households have been billed incorrectly in the last two years, with many taking as long as two months to rectify the problem.
