Electric utilities 'need to reduce impact on the environment'

24 April 2009

Some of the UK's utilities are not making provisions to make their services environmentally-friendly, it is believed.

A study by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) found that 61% of suppliers anticipate they will continue to create greenhouse gas emissions, with 59% revealing they have reduction plans in place.

Furthermore, 14 out of the 110 respondents provided data on their forecasted production.

"The report shows that although many firms understand climate change is a business issue, we still have a very long way to go to de-carbonise the sector to ensure emissions are cut," says Paul Dickinson, Chief Executive of CDP.

Some energy suppliers, however, are making plans to reduce their carbon footprint, by setting up green funds to provide cash to environmental projects.

Others run a carbon offset scheme, which involves the planting of trees to compensate for the carbon created, or energy match initiatives to create renewable energy for the National Grid.
