Energy-efficiency 'crucial to cutting carbon emissions'

28 April 2009

People should be making provisions to help the UK meet its carbon-reducing targets, says one expert.

Kevin McCloud, TV presenter and eco-pioneer, speaking on behalf of Grand Designs, claims that existing homes needed to be kitted-out with the necessary measures to make the difference.

His Great British Refurb campaign aims to address these issues, with the expert urging the public and businesses to consider making changes now.

"Frankly there's not a hope in hell of meeting our targets unless we do something about the existing housing stock and unless we can retrofit and refurbish those homes to a new low carbon economy," he continues.

Figures from the Energy Savings Trust show a 100W light bulb left on for just half an hour creates enough CO2 to fill a party balloon.
