Ofgem welcomes gas meter competition ruling

1 May 2009

A Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) decision which found the National Grid to be in breach of competition law has been welcomed by Ofgem.

The ruling found that the National Grid was guilty of restricting competition in the domestic gas meter market.

Ofgem Chairman Lord Mogg stated: "This case illustrates Ofgem's commitment to make full use of its powers to tackle abuse and ensure energy markets work effectively for consumers."

He added that the decision had realised how the National Grid had abused its dominance in the domestic gas metering market.

Energy customers can make sure they are getting the best deal by comparing gas and electricity.

Last month, Ofcom revealed proposals to protect small business companies against contracts they would rather opt-out of and to give help with understanding the products they apply for.

A ban is therefore to be placed on the automatic roll-over of energy contracts.
