A number of energy suppliers in the UK are failing to help homeowners reduce the cost of their bills, it is claimed.
The Local Government Association (LGA) states that under the government's Carbon Emissions Reduction Target, energy companies are required to cut carbon emissions from people's homes.
However, many are attempting to meet this target simply by giving out energy-saving light bulbs, saving the homeowner an average of £3 a year.
The LGA is therefore calling on the authorities to toughen these targets in order for more people to benefit from loft and wall insulation.
"Suppliers have a duty to do what's best for people and the environment, not what's cheapest and most convenient for them," says Councillor Paul Bettison, Chairman of the LGA's Environment Board.
Ofgem recently revealed how many of the UK's consumers believe being green is the future of the energy industry.
