Ofgem allows faster wind and low-carbon generators

12 May 2009

Rules surrounding the faster connection of wind and low-carbon generators are being relaxed by regulatory body Ofgem.

It has also authorised £12.5 million of investment, which it hopes will encourage faster connections.

"More home-grown renewable generation means more secure energy supplies. Renewables are also instrumental in cutting carbon emissions and dealing with climate change," revealed Mike O'Brien, Minister at Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Some of the generators may start to be connected this year, with Ofgem implementing the solution while more long-term alternatives are discovered.

Earlier this year, Ofgem criticised suppliers' practices with direct debit payments, leading it to introduce new standards to reinstate consumer confidence.

It did, however, note that energy suppliers were not taking more money than they were due from consumers.
