The government needs to respond to the future needs of the environment by investing more in renewable energy, one industry expert suggested.
Thomas Lingard, Deputy Director of Green Alliance, said such investment would also have positive knock-on effects for the rest of the economy, creating more jobs and increasing gross domestic product.
"You have to think about the choice between trying to grow sectors of the economy that fundamentally will exacerbate environmental damage and growing sectors of the economy that will mitigate environmental damage," he suggested.
Mr Lingard referred to the situation as a no-brainer and encouraged more investment to secure the environmental future of the country.
It was recently suggested by Europa that reaching the 2020 renewable energy targets is expected to lead to around 2.8 million jobs in the sector.
