Energy problems continue to plague UK consumers, with a 19% rise in fuel debt recorded by the Citizens Advice Bureau in the 12 months to March 2009.
Overall, the organisation saw six million new problems over the period, reflecting a 9% increase compared to 2007/08 figures.
The new data follows a warning by uSwitch.com that there is no cohesive approach to tackling fuel poverty in the UK.
Customers can compare energy tariffs at uSwitch.com to find the cheapest deal but the price comparison website has urged the government to develop joined up thinking with other organisations to improve the UK's energy problem.
Commenting on the new Citizens Advice Bureau figures, the organisation's Chief Executive David Harker explained that they reflect the "human impact" of the recession.
He said: "We are seeing an enormous rise in the number of people turning to us for help because they have lost their job, or are struggling with debts or having problems keeping up with their mortgages.
Mr Harker added that it is "vital" customers are treated "fairly and sympathetically" by debtors to help ease debt problems.
