Offshore windfarms 'will help beat climate change'

18 June 2009

Offshore windfarms may soon be providing energy to UK customers through a number of different infrastructures after a regime was finalised.

Both Ofgem and the Department of Energy and Climate Change have unveiled the plans, which could see the energy provided through undersea networks.

It is believed that the changes will help the country reach its climate change goals, while also providing better value for its consumers.

Around 39GW of offshore wind capacity is set to be installed by 2020, which will need an estimated £15 billion of investment.

Last month, Ofgem announced it was to make gas networks more transparent by giving regulators the chance to voluntarily join the project.

It will look into transit routes across key areas of Europe, including Belgium and Germany.
