Online billing 'a cheaper alternative'

19 June 2009

Big savings can be made on energy bills if consumers choose to move to online billing, it has been suggested.

Principle Policy Advocate at Consumer Focus Zoe McLeod said direct debit payments could save people up to £110 a year, whereas they could save as much as £190 by changing to internet billing.

"However, it does depend on which supplier you are with as some have already equalised their tariffs so the best thing to do is to go to a switching site," she continued.

Ms McLeod revealed that people with debts of £100 or less have the right to switch provider under the debt assignment protocol.

On average, prepayment meters cost £1,252 a year - £107 more than being a standard customer paying by direct debt and £200 more than being on an online energy plan, uSwitch.com recently revealed.
